What Supplements Should I Take?
This is a question many people ask.
Vitamin C is the vitamin most people know and take when they fear a cold or flu is coming on. Vitamin C is vital for the production of a protein needed to make collagen in the skin, bones, teeth and cartilage. Plus, it is said to protect against cold and flu.
Generally aim to eat fresh, colourful food. It is better to get your Vitamin C from your diet or a multivitamin rather than the ever-popular individual soluble Vitamin C supplements which can contain up to 1,000 times your daily allowance, which may be harmful.
Calcium is especially important for teenagers as these are the years when bones are growing and you want to build strong bones. If you're in your teens, make sure you don't cut out dairy products such as milk, yoghurt and cheese. Calcium should be combined with exercise and Vitamin D to really build strong bone density. If you are older and have had fractures, then you may need a Calcium supplement.
The media has made us afraid of sunlight and this has lead to a population with low Vitamin D levels and deficiencies not seen since the 1940s. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a wide range of ailments, ranging from aches and pains in the bones, to diabetes and cancer. Whilst taking supplements will help, active sunlight on the skin is still needed to help the body properly absorb Vitamin D. A supplement may be needed as well as 5 minutes per day in the sunlight.
Fish Oils are rich in Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids, which are good for your joints and brain function. There has been a real rise in mental illness over the past 10 years and some experts put this down to the fact that our diets are changing. We are eating less oily fish and more animal fat. Omega-3 found in fish is good for brain development; therefore a lack may make people more susceptible to mental health illness. Take note of this and eat more oily fish such as trout, mackerel, tuna, herring, sardines and salmon. Aim for 2 portions per week and it need not be expensive as you can get all you need from canned fish.
